Gig
Before joining his cousins in Big Smith full-time, Bill Thomas was never far from the action. He's penned songs familiar to fans, "Drip Drip Drip," "Paw Paw Patch Revisited," and two more songs that appeared on the Hay to Zzzzzz CD, including the album's namesake, "Hay is for Horses." He also sat in with the band many times back in the day as a guest banjo player, including session work on the Big Rock CD. As of February 2007, Bill, or "Billy Keith" as he is known to family, is a full-time member of Big Smith, contributing his singing, songwriting, and bass playing. Alongside his brother Rik, Bill grew up in the college town of Macomb, Illinois, doing mean things to toy soldiers with firecrackers and making sure his socks were up to his knees for t-ball. He spent many years living and playing music in Austin, Texas and Springfield, Missouri before finally settling down with wife Carrie and son Eli in rural Spokane, Missouri. Prior to joining Big Smith, Bill toured and played bass with Cindy Woolf, Stevie Newman & the Domino Kings, and the Mark Bilyeu Band among others. He put forth his own material in 2002 on the CD Live in Spokane, one of the first releases on the MayApple label. Bill is a prolific songwriter, and it will be fun watching his older cousins scurry to keep up.
